Magna has teamed up with a European car manufacturer to launch a new generation of front-facing camera modules

Magna's Gen5 system features a scalable, integrated front-facing camera module with remote sensing and side detection;

– A large number of applications across various platforms and models across regions in the coming years;

– Production is expected to begin in late September 2023.

According to Myms Consulting, Magna recently announced at the 2023 IAA press conference that it has begun production of the innovative Gen5 front-facing camera module system for a European automaker. In the coming years, the modular system will be used in a large number of vehicle platforms and models in different regions. Magna has leveraged its industry-leading camera expertise and technology, as well as global manufacturing processes, to develop scalable, all-in-one front-facing camera modules that meet the needs of automotive manufacturers.

The Gen5 front camera module system is manufactured at Magna facilities in Germany, Slovakia and China.

The complete front-facing camera system has a wide field of view, with a horizontal Angle of view of 120° and a vertical Angle of view of 48°, and can remotely sense obstacles more than 160 meters in front of the vehicle, as well as detect objects on the side of the vehicle, such as traffic lights, emergency vehicles and inbound vehicles. The camera has a resolution of 8 megapixels, a frame rate of 36 frames per second, and displays in full color. The microprocessor is expandable for sensor fusion with up to five radars.

The new generation front camera module system has the following features:

– Memory Parking Assist (TPA) – a comfort automatic parking feature that, when selected, automatically parks according to a previously learned "park in" or "Park out" trajectory.

– Environmental Information Awareness (ECR) – Classifies the current road conditions ahead based on road humidity and snow cover, allowing the autonomous driving function to control the vehicle.

Monocular Scene Reconstruction (MSR) – The ability to detect the transition area from the driving zone to the non-driving zone. For example, transition zones from asphalt roads to grass, construction sites, etc.

Hazard Detection (HZD) – Static obstacles on the road can be detected in advance to avoid collisions.
